Have you ever considered plastic surgery to reduce the effects of aging? Does the thought of going under the knife frighten you? Perhaps you’ve considered less invasive forms of plastic surgery such as Botox or collagen injections, and realized that they are only temporary fixes and need frequent re-injections to maintain results. Years ago cosmetic dentistry was never discussed or let alone considered an option to plastic surgery. However, these days it is one of the highly sought after treatments that can easily and within 2 weeks or less make a dramatic impact in achieving a youthful appearance and reducing wrinkle lines.

If there is something about your smile that bothers you, holding back your smile can eventually take its toll on your facial features. Years of holding back your smile or covering your teeth with your lips to hide them will eventually cause the muscles around the smile to lose its tonicity and the lower portion of the face will begin to droop accomplishing what you’ve been trying to do all along which is cover your smile. However this shouldn’t be. Imagine your confidence if you had the smile you always dreamt about with diminished wrinkle appearance and improved muscle tonicity. Would you still hold back your smile? Or, rather look for any excuse to flash your beautiful appearance? That’s what cosmetic smile makeovers can do.

We feel esthetic dentistry will not only have a tremendous effect on self-esteem it can also improve how the jaw functions. As teeth wear down or edges of them chip, the bite will eventually collapse and this will place the burden of chewing on the jaw joints not on the teeth where it was designed to take most of the pressure from chewing. This we feel is a contributing factor to TMJ problems. The other problem when teeth wear down is that it will eventually expose the underlying tooth structures and once that happens teeth will stain rapidly. Bleaching will only temporarily solve this problem and it will quickly revert back because stains have a much easier way to get inside.

At NYC Smile Design we realize that every face is unique and therefore can’t prescribe a generic set of teeth to every smile facial features have to be carefully evaluated to determine what works best for the individual. We believe our practice name is truly a reflection of what we do; “design smiles” not apply porcelain pieces. Cosmetic dentistry can be a life changing event which often times paves the way for career advancements and a greater zest for life.

Smile Makeovers

During the past year or two there has been a lot of media attention about cosmetic dentistry, especially extreme makeovers. Our philosophy is to enhance the beauty and not create an artificial generic look. Through technological advancements, it is now possible to conservatively improve and strengthen the health and function of a patient’s appearance and smile.

If you are considering an enhancement of your appearance with a smile makeover, it is important to have realistic expectations. Often times a client sets their expectations too low and cannot imagine the wonderful possibilities that exist to improve ones overall appearance.

The most important consideration when thinking about a smile enhancement is the expertise of the cosmetic dental team. Imagine building your dream house. You wouldn’t just hire the best architect and not pay attention to the general contractor and the materials they are using to build the house. The same analogy holds true in a smile makeover. It starts with knowledgeable cosmetic dentists with an artistic flair that takes into consideration all the facial features when designing a new smile, all the way to the ceramist that can reproduce what the dentist has envisioned.

The philosophy of esthetic dentistry can be defined as the process of providing the most convincing natural dentition possible while maintaining it to the highest standards. The true understanding of all aspects of comprehensive esthetic and cosmetic dentistry and the integration of the philosophical triad of “health, function and beauty” assists us in providing optimal dental care. We believe what really sets us apart is our vision of the final outcome.

 Orthodontic Options

Orthodontics consists of diagnosing and treating malocclusions or "bad bites" such as teeth crowding, spaces between teeth, overbites and under bites. These conditions may be inherited or caused by trauma, habits such as nail biting or thumb sucking, and drifting of loose teeth due to gum disease. Misaligned teeth contribute to poor dental health because they are hard to clean. Difficulty in cleaning can lead to decay and gum disease, chewing problems and jaw, head and neck aches. Teeth that are in proper alignment are more attractive, younger looking and healthier. There are several ways in which teeth can be guided into proper position within an efficient treatment time to create a pleasing facial balance. The good news is that teeth can be moved at any age! This has helped many of our patients by building their self-confidence and helping them with their social and professional success.

Dr. Mello is specifically trained in orthodontic care and can assess your specific needs and explain the best type of braces for your case. During the initial consultation, you'll be able to talk to her about the specific changes you would like to make in your appearance. She will explain the different options available to you, the procedure itself and its risks and limitations. She will discuss cost estimates, since they vary according to length and difficulty of the case. Patient references are always available.

Types of Orthodontics Available:

Invisalign is the aesthetic clear way to straighten teeth without braces, utilizing a series of removable appliances called aligners that are each worn for about two weeks- 24 hours a day, except when you are eating, brushing or flossing. Invisalign is virtually undetectable, so no one will know you are in treatment. Dr. Mello has received extensive training in this technique to provide aesthetic orthodontic treatment for adults and teens that can benefit from straight teeth or the repositioning of teeth for proper placement of Invisalign is the aesthetic clear way to straighten teeth without braces, utilizing a series of restorations. Dr. Mello is one of the top providers of Invisalign in New York City!

Aligners are made of a clear, thin, medical grade polymer that is virtually invisible when worn. Since they are Most appointments take just 15-30 minutes. Invisalign fees are comparable to traditional braces. Orthodontic insurance covers Invisalign usually to the same extent as traditional orthodontics.

Instant Orthodontics - With modern dental technology, uneven teeth can be reshaped and laminated with high tech ceramics. We call this instant orthodontics, using veneers or laminates instead of braces to make teeth look straight. It can close large gaps and correct some overcrowding in as little as 1-2 days. It is typically a pain-free procedure requiring only the use of local anesthetics. You are a candidate for this if you would like your teeth to look straighter and cannot commit to the time for conventional orthodontics. The extent to which this approach can be used depends on how crowded and crooked the teeth are to begin with. Sometimes a combination of limited orthodontics and ceramic enhancement may be the best choice.

Traditional Orthodontics involves the use of metal brackets that are bonded to the front of your teeth. Wires and elastic bands are used to apply pressure to move your teeth into proper alignment. A popular alternative to metal brackets are ceramic brackets; these brackets greatly reduce that "metal mouth" look. With traditional orthodontics, most cases can be completed in 6-18 months, depending on the severity of the original condition and the treatment outcome desired.

Removable Orthodontics - With Removable Orthodontics, the patient wears a removable retainer-like appliance that has various springs and attachments on it to create pressure to move the teeth into proper alignment. The use of these appliances is case-selective and in most cases cannot achieve what traditional or Invisalign orthodontics can do. But for many cases, this is an excellent option provided patient compliance is excellent.

Sedation Dentistry

Most people can manage dental treatment with little more than some slight anxiety. For some people however, going to the dentist is a lot more difficult. If you have ever avoided getting much needed dental care out of fear or anxiety, or if the thought of going to the dentist makes you anxious or nervous, then sedation dentistry could be for you. Drs. Tabib and Mello receive many referrals from patients who have found their experience with sedation dentistry to be life changing. Sedation dentistry allows a patient to be calm and drowsy while still remaining in control.

Hygiene and Periodontal Treatments

The #1 reason why people lose their teeth is undiagnosed periodontal disease. But, we know that 90% of all adults have periodontal (gum) disease of various levels. The disease begins without warning, and in early stages causes gums to become sore, bleed easily and contribute to bad breath. As it progresses, teeth loosen and separate; your bite changes and teeth are eventually lost. For this reason, we incorporate a careful regimen of gum evaluation into each visit. Our goal is to diagnose the progression of this disease and offer an opportunity for you to minimize bone loss and preserve your smile for a lifetime through our Periodontal Maintenance Program (PMP). The PMP is designed to create a custom regimen for your condition that will include treatment at the office as well as specific home care. This program is highly effective in the treatment as well as the prevention of periodontal disease.

Non-surgical Periodontal Therapy

·          Laser curettage and periodontal therapy.

·          Customized oral hygiene regimen including Sonicare Toothbrush, prescription rinses and toothpastes, tongue cleaners and irrigators.

·          Periodontal scaling and rootplaning.

·          Teeth cleaning and polishing performed on a three month cycle.

Surgical Periodontal Treatments

Considered upon reevaluation of non-surgical therapy and only after all non-surgical therapies have been attempted to treat the condition.

Dr. Mello has received extensive training in surgical periodontal therapy. Treatment available includes: grafting, gum recontouring, periodontal plastic surgery and periodontal flap surgery. It is our philosophy that with the judicious application of these therapies we can best help our patients. We firmly believe patients benefit from a more conservative approach rather than an aggressive surgical approach. Your comfort always remains our first concern.

Dental Implants

Dr. Tabib performs both the surgical and restorative aspect of implant dentistry. Having a dentist with combined expertise in both areas offers patients several important advantages. One of the chief advantages is that implants can be surgically placed directly in an optimal esthetic and restorative position, even if adjustments must be made during surgery due to anatomy or bone quality.

There are over 50 million Americans who are missing one or more natural teeth. Modern dentistry provides an alternative to dentures or partials with implants. Dental implants offer patients that have lost teeth a "second chance". There have been tremendous advances in implant dentistry. And, also a tremendous amount of misinformation. So let's talk about contemporary implants.

Contemporary Implants

·          The most permanent way to replace missing teeth

·          Artificial tooth roots which occupies the position that your teeth once held

·          Stimulates the bone and stop bone loss, maintaining the bone's form and density

·          Prevent the necessity of having other teeth cut down in order to build a bridge or crown

·          Biocompatible

·          Made of titanium

·          Replaces extracted teeth

·          Predictable

·          Esthetic
